NIH Tightens Subaward Oversight – Prior Approval Now Required for Domestic Additions

In a significant policy shift, the NIH will now require prior approval for adding new domestic subawards to active grants and cooperative agreements, effective June 1, 2026. The change addresses longstanding challenges in tracking and overseeing subaward activity, and follows the NIH’s earlier decision to no longer recognize foreign subawards as of May 2025. All requests must go through the eRA Commons Prior Approval Module.
